Teen killed in Oakland Park crash with Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy
A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy driving on Dixie Highway late Saturday in Oakland Park collided with another car in the intersection of Northeast 56th Street. A teenage girl was killed in the crash, and two other young people were injured.
BSO traffic homicide investigators are working to determine how exactly the crash happened. Kara Catlin, 14, was a passenger in the 1996 Honda Civic that had been heading northbound on Dixie Highway just before 10 p.m. According to witnesses, the driver of that vehicle, 21-year-old Heather Meyer, had been attempting to make a left turn to head west onto Northeast 56th Street when the crash occurred in the intersection. The deputy had been southbound on Dixie Highway prior to the crash. He did not have his lights or siren activated at the time.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics transported Meyer, Catlin and passenger Gabriel Allegra to Broward General Medical Center. Catlin died at the hospital. The deputy was transported to Holy Cross Hospital with minor injuries.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit at
