One man dies in Broward accident on U.S. 27

An early morning crash on U.S. 27 claimed the life of a Broward man on Monday.

The Broward Sheriff’s Communication Center received a call at around 6:02 a.m. notifying deputies of the collision. The preliminary investigation indicates that 69-year-old Kenneth Duckworth, who was driving a black Toyota, was on the left lane of southbound U.S. 27 moving at a slow rate of speed. A yellow Ford Pick-up, driven by 28-year-old Christian Mantiel, was headed southbound at about the posted speed limit, when it rear-ended the Toyota.

The small vehicle slid off the shoulder of the road, coming to rest in an open grassy area. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded and pronounced Duckworth dead on the scene.

Mantiel was transported to Cleveland Clinic, where he was treated and released.

The Southbound lanes of U.S. 27 remained closed for several hours while BSO Traffic Homicide Detectives conducted their investigation.

Charges will be determined pending the outcome of the investigation.
