Man arrested for plotting to kill wife

A Coconut Creek woman is happy to be alive after hearing the shocking news that her husband was plotting her murder.

On April 19, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained information about a man who was looking for someone to murder his wife. A BSO undercover investigator posing as a hit man spoke with the man, 47-year-old Charles Barrett, and agreed to meet him to discuss the scheme on April 22.

During the meeting, Barrett offered the undercover detective $5,000 cash for his services and was adamant that he didn’t want his wife “injured,” or “in the hospital,” he wanted her “dead.” Barrett told the detective the murder should appear to be the result of a robbery. The unscrupulous man said he would be out of town for approximately a month beginning on April 29 and the murder should be carried out while he was away to give him an alibi. He asked for it to be done the last day of his vacation because he paid a lot of money and didn’t want to have to return home early. He wanted his wife shot, not stabbed, because a stabbing would leave a mess for him to clean up, and said he would like the woman’s daughter to be the one to find the body.

The undercover detective told the man to call him if he wanted to call off the deal before the scheduled date of the murder, but he said he had been thinking about having her murdered for two years and would not be changing his mind. The detective further insisted that if Barrett changed his mind he would be refunded this money, but Barrett reiterated that there would be no way he would change his mind because he wanted his wife dead.

On April 24, Barrett asked the detective to meet him at his home in Coconut Creek. There he handed the detective a diagram of the house with the key to the front entrance and the alarm code, and $2,500 cash as a deposit. Once the items were handed to the detective, BSO units moved in and arrested the man.

Barrett said he wanted his wife dead due to financial disagreements and constant arguing.
