Fern Forest celebrates 25th anniversary on Nov 14
Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek will observe its 25th Anniversary – the park opened on November 17, 1985 – with a day of activities on Sunday, November 14. From 10 to 11 a.m. there will be a Wetland Critters family dip net activity, followed by a presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on “Saving the Historic Wetlands of Fern Forest,” by Carol Morgenstern of the Parks Environmental Section and/or Dave Markward of Broward County Waste and Wastewater Services. From noon to 1 p.m., native reptile and amphibian expert Mike Brennan will present “Reptiles and Amphibians of Fern Forest,” and from 1 to 2 p.m. there will be a guided walk through the nature center, led by Nikki Hochberg, the park’s manager and a naturalist, and Rick McKenzie, a longtime Fern Forest volunteer who now works at the park. Then, from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a Jammin’ in the Forest jam session featuring bluegrass and folk music. The nature center’s volunteer group, the Fern Allies, will sell refreshments from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
