Darrell Gwynn Foundation Miami HEAT donate wheelchair
The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, joined by Miami HEAT star Udonis Haslem, donated a $16,600 custom built “Miami HEAT themed” wheelchair to Herminio Escalona at halftime of the Miami HEAT game vs. the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday, November 19.
Herminio Escalona suffered a medulla compression in a car accident resulting in paralysis and could not afford a life-changing custom wheelchair that the Darrell Gwynn Foundation provided through its wheelchair donation program.
Herminio is a fan of the Miami HEAT and his new wheelchair is decorated in HEAT colors and logos.
Established in 2002, the Davie-based Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide AWARENESS, PREVENTION, SUPPORT and ultimately a CURE for paralysis. To raise awareness for that mission, the foundation lobbied for and secured official adoption of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week by the Florida State Legislature in 2006 and each year since. The fifth Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week is being observed November 15-21, 2010.
