Broward Schools, local teacher honored for environmental efforts

Broward County Public Schools Environmental website and South Plantation High School teacher Pamela Krauss have each received the prestigious 2010 Governor’s Serve to Preserve: Green School Award.  Winners received a trophy and $1,500.

The District was honored for its interactive, environmental website “Live Green, Learn Green” ( Krauss was selected for a “Green Waterwise” project.

The District’s environmental website, launched this past March, supports the District’s Environmental Strategic Plan.  The site is an educational tool that enables the District to inform the public of its efforts to “go green,” and showcase the many environmental projects being conducted in classrooms.

Krauss and her students designed and constructed a solar powered irrigation system to water the edible plants they grow in the school’s garden. This is the second consecutive year Krauss has been a finalist for the honor.

The Governor’s Serve to Preserve: Green School Awards recognize exemplary and innovative efforts of students, teachers, schools and school districts to promote sustainability in the K-12 learning environment.  Eligible projects were categorized in five themes: recycling, green learning environments – including indoor and outdoor facilities, exemplary green curriculum and teacher professional development programs, green service learning projects and green policies or partnerships.

The Florida Department of Education, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Collins Center for Public Policy and the Florida Foundation are the partner organizations that manage the program.

The winners were announced October 12th at a ceremony during the Sustainability Florida Conference, held at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott in Palm Beach Gardens.
