A surface low crossing Cuba is expected to head north, skimming the entire coast of South Florida. Tropical Depression 16 is forecast possibly to become Tropical Storm Nicole. Tropical storm warnings are now in effect for the entire South Florida region. We are also under a tropical storm wind warning and a flood watch, all until 2 a.m. Thursday. (See more details below from NOAA) While the storm isn’t very strong, it is expected to dump a lot of rain on South Florida. The South Florida Water Management District is issuing advisories and monitoring the situation to prevent storm drainage backup. As of press time, “the SFWMD is taking the appropriate measures to reduce potential flooding such as placing coastal structures and canal water levels in the low range. This prepares the primary flood control system in advance to maximize storage of stormwater runoff.” (From a press release).
They also said “flooding is possible with heavy rainfall that occurs during a short period of time, and it may take several days for the excess water to move through secondary canals.”

.STORM INFORMATION...
AT 11 AM EDT...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION SIXTEEN WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 20.6N...LONGITUDE 82.5W. THIS WAS ABOUT
390 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF MIAMI FL...OR ABOUT 380 MILES SOUTH
OF NAPLES FL. STORM MOTION WAS NORTH-NORTHEAST AT 10 MPH. MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS WERE 35 MPH.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
THE PRIMARY IMPACTS WITH THIS SYSTEM ARE EXPECTED TO BE RAINFALL
FLOODING AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS. ON THE CURRENT FORECAST
TRACK AND INTENSITY, HEAVY RAINS WILL SPREAD ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY, WITH TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS DURING
THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY. DUE TO THE RATHER DISORGANIZED NATURE OF THE
SYSTEM, IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT MOST OF THE IMPACTS WILL BE ON THE
EAST SIDE. THIS MEANS THAT ONLY A SLIGHT SHIFT EAST OF THE CURRENT
FORECAST TRACK WILL RESULT IN THE HEAVIEST RAIN AND STRONGEST WINDS
REMAINING OFFSHORE. NEVERTHELESS, SOUTH FLORIDIANS SHOULD PREPARE
FOR THE POTENTIAL OF SIGNIFICANT FLOODING TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY,
ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS
DURING THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY.
.NEXT UPDATE...
THE NEXT LOCAL STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE IN MIAMI SHORTLY. IT WILL PROVIDE IMPORTANT DETAILS
REGARDING THE EVOLVING TROPICAL CYCLONE THREATS AND THEIR
POTENTIAL IMPACTS UPON THE AREA.
