Broward School board candidate Sutton hosting meet and greet
One local candidate for the Broward County School Board will be sharing his vision for changes at the sixth largest school district in the country. Coral Springs resident Bob Sutton, who recently filed to run for the Broward School Board District 4 seat against seven other candidates, will be hosting a meet and greet Wednesday night. The seat is currently held by Stephanie Kraft who is not running for re-election.
Sutton said he has a major goal of getting more students to graduate what he terms a “employable skill set.” His education bill, introduced to the Florida Legislature and sent to Obama as an idea to consider, allows high school dropouts a chance to graduate with a degree without being in a classroom, but learning employable skill sets on the job in a real-world work environment or public service arena.
Sutton, like the majority of parents in Broward, is concerned about how budget cuts are being handled as well as rampant corruption in Broward.
“Over and over the students lose out,” said Sutton, a Piper High math teacher. “I’d love to go over the past five years with a forensic audit”
Sutton was voted Teacher of the Year at Piper High School where he teaches math and ACT prep, assists with security and teachers in their classrooms, and volunteers after school with the detention students. In addition, Sutton teaches business classes in the Coral Springs Community Schools. Sutton’s strong interest in math is the direct result of a severe car crash. Sutton’s treating neurologist advised him that he would benefit from taking math classes as part of his rehabilitation routine.
If elected in November, Sutton said he would leave his teaching position to be on the Broward School Board. His three children are students in Coral Springs and his wife is also a teacher at Coral Glades High School.
Sutton’s campaign platform will include, but will not be limited to, the following: Encouraging student accountability, providing resource stewardship and financial accountability, creating a pathway for students to graduate with an employable skill set, integrating academics and athletics to increase the number of student athletes who receive scholarships, financially rewarding teachers and coaches who excel at their jobs, and set in place fixed times for teachers and parents to meet with school board members.
Sutton will be sharing his vision for the School Board on July 14, 2010 at Bella Cibo Restaurant from 6pm-7:30pm. Bella Cibo is located at , www.trattoriabellacibo.com
Sutton will discuss cutting corruption instead of teacher jobs and student curriculum; creating pathways for students to graduate with an employable skill set; and promoting an academic arena for student athletes to graduate with scholarships. You can also follow him on Facebook – .
