16-year-old Pembroke Pines killed in SW Ranches ATV wreck

A 16-year-old Pembroke Pines boy was killed after striking a telephone pole while riding on an all-terrain vehicle with another teen.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews and BSO deputies responded to the 5400 block of SW 172 Avenue just before 5 p.m. Monday, after a 9-1-1 caller advised of an ATV crash with serious injuries. The ATV’s rider was found on the ground, critically injured. On the scene in less than three minutes, BSFR Southwest Ranches units immediately initiated advanced life support measures and flew the victim via BSO Air Rescue helicopter to Memorial Regional Hospital where he subsequently died from his injuries Monday night. The driver of the ATV was not injured.

BSO Traffic Homicide Unit investigators are looking into the cause of the accident. Under investigation is how the victim, a 16-year-old Pembroke Pines boy crashed into the wooden utility pole. He was riding on the ATV driven by a 16-year-old Southwest Ranches teen at the time. Neither of the teens were wearing helmets.

SW 172 Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours from Griffin Road south while investigators processed the scene. Southwest Ranches Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
