Broward Public Schools – Employee Wellness Award Recipient
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) was recently recognized as a 2009 Bronze School Employee Wellness Program winner by the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE), a membership organization for health promotion and health education professionals within state health agencies, U.S. territories and the Indian Health Service. BCPS was one of nine schools/districts recognized by the organization.
As a bronze winner, the District receives a $250 grant to use for its School Employee Wellness program and a banner recognizing their achievement. Additionally, BCPS will be featured on DHPE’s school employee wellness Web site and be invited to National Conferences to make presentations about its successful School Employee Wellness Program.
BCPS school employee wellness program provides free blood screenings, mammograms, flu shots, wellness workshops, H1N1 vaccinations, and other educational resources to its over 30,000 employees by partnering with local hospitals, the Broward County Department of Health and a pharmaceutical company. The District’s health insurance plan also provides free gym memberships to eligible employees and free wellness check-ups for women.
DHPE, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), focuses on school employee health. This year, DHPE launched an awards program to recognize schools that implement school employee wellness programs, which promote employee health, improve workforce productivity and reduce the costs of employee absenteeism and healthcare. Overall, 46 schools/districts across the country submitted applications for DHPE’s 2009 School Employee Wellness Awards program.
