Texting while driving may soon be illegal in Florida… I’m screwed
Here’s the press release:
Tallahassee, FL – Legislation passed testerday that will improve safety of motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists; prevent crashes; reduce the financial impact of injuries, death, and property damage caused by texting while driving; and authorize law enforcement to issue to issue citations as a secondary offense.
“I am thrilled that this issue is finally getting the attention it deserves,” said Representative Doug Holder (R-Sarasota), sponsor of the bill. “We must send a message that Florida’s roads are safe to travel.”
The newly crafted Proposed Committee Substitute for HB 41 adopted portions of U.S. DOT’s proposed measures, including the specific prohibition banning texting while driving, while ensuring the prohibition fits Florida’s traffic framework. The express legislative intent of the bill is to improve safety of motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists; prevent crashes; reduce the financial impact of injuries, death, and property damage caused by texting while driving; and authorize law enforcement to issue to issue citations as a secondary offense.
The bill passed unanimously through the Roads, Bridges, & Ports Policy Committee. The committee took on the task of reworking this piece of legislation during a workshop meeting on February 17, 2010. The bill now moves to the Public Safety & Domestic Security Policy Committee.
