Coconut Creek celebrates Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony and the 10th Annual Free Tree Giveaway
The City of Coconut Creek is pleased to announce that 700 trees will be distributed to city residents at the 10th Annual Free Tree Giveaway, which will take place on Saturday, April 24th, 20010, from 8:00AM until noon at City Hall.
Trees that are to be given away include: Red Maple, Pond Cypress, White Geiger, Blolly and Bridalveil Tree. Residents will receive information on butterfly gardening, wildlife habitat gardening, proper tree pruning, and tree care by attending a series of educational booths before picking up their free tree and plants.
“We encourage residents to come out on the 24th to pick up their free tree and plants. It’s a great opportunity to learn about trees, wildlife, and water conservation all while enjoying the festive community atmosphere and meeting your neighbors “stated Sharon Vollmer, Landscape Coordinator for the City of Coconut Creek.
Additionally, water conservation methods, such as using rain barrels, will be demonstrated and the Sawgrass Nature Center will be showcasing rehabilitated wildlife. A representative from the South Florida Water Management District will available to discuss water-wise landscaping and Home Depot will have a hands-on booth where youngsters will have the opportunity to plant seeds.
The retail cost of the tree, along with the additional plants, is valued between $80 and $100. The Free Tree Giveaway is funded through grants and special programs, which are not generated by tax revenue.
The trees will be available to Coconut Creek residents on a first come, first served basis at City Hall, 4800 W. Copans Road. Along with the trees, one wildlife-attracting plant and one “water-wise” plant will be given away, while supplies last. Coconut Creek residents should bring proper ID to the Free Tree Giveaway, which may include a driver’s license or a water bill.
