Professional Roller Derby Bout Coming Jan. 30 to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek
Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will present a professional roller derby bout between the Gold Coast Derby Grrls (GCDG) versus
Axles of Annihilation of the Oregon Rose City Roller Girls League, from Portland Ore. on January 30 in the casino’s parking lot at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $8 in advance at the casino’s cashier’s cage; $12 at the door; $15 for the 21-and-over “crash zone” (available at door only, sold by GCDG). Children must be accompanied by an adult. The bout is sanctioned by the Gold Coast Derby League.
“It’s nostalgic to watch live what we all saw on TV as kids,” said Seminole Casino general manager, Steve Bonner. “We have a professional team and an active league right here in Broward and we’re excited to introduce them. It’ll be fun for everyone.”
By night, these are tough athletes, ripping around an oval track on roller skates, blocking and knocking the competition off and into the crash zone. They go by names like Freek-a-Rella, Trauma Sutra, and Tsunami Tsue. But by day, they’re working women. Skater and PR Director Laura Garro (aka Carnivorous Licks) is a comptroller at Everglades Petroleum Tank Service. Christina Annichiarico (Freek-a-Rella) is a professional chef. Marni Kramerman (Trauma Sutra) is a neo-natal nurse. Lorraine Currow (Tsunami Tsue) is a recruiter for the Coast Guard and the team’s captain for this bout.
Meredith Bullard, a Seminole Indian and member of the Panther Clan is “proving to be a very promising power hitter,” said Garro, who’s also a team coach. “Meredith is currently finishing her Fresh Meat training.” That’s what they call the new girls who are tested after 24 weeks of learning derby skating and its rules, Garro explained. Bullard passed with flying colors and skated in her first pick up scrimmage on Sunday, January 11 against Fort Myers.
A bout is usually two 30-minute periods with a 15-minute intermission. There are 10 girls on the track at the beginning of every jam, two jammer (one from each team), two pivots (one from each team) and six blockers (three from each team). A jam runs for two minutes, or less, and there could be any given amount of jams in a period. The point of the game is to score as many points, which is done by the jammers, as possible. The blockers assist their perspective jammers and hinder opposing jammers in the scoring of those points. (Derby is sometimes hard to understand from a description so this YouTube video definitely helps: .)
For thrill-seeking fans, a crash zone with “suicide seats” are taped off as close to the track as possible. Skating combatants sometimes find themselves in this skating mosh pit, on a spectator’s lap after a hard hit.
Seminole Casino Coconut Creek already plans to sponsor a second bout on March 13 with the Steel City Derby Girls from Pittsburgh.
Attractive, tough girls on skates; back this time for good!
