following is the calendar of art events for the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center (www.levisjcc.org) for the 2009-2010 season. The JCC is located at 9801 Donna Klein Blvd., Boca.
19th Annual Book & Author Luncheon
WHAT: Two best-selling authors will discuss their works of literature. Attending this year will be Jeffrey Zaslow (author of “The Girls From Ames: A Story of Women & a Forty Year Friendship”) and Scott Lasser (author of “The Year That Follows”).

“A Literary Afternoon” Lecture Series
WHAT: Each afternoon, the series will feature a conversation with a best-selling author about his/her newly released publication. Featured this year are: Sara Houghteling(“Pictures at an Exhibition”) on December 8; Sally Koslow (“The Late Lamented Molly Marx”) on January 12; Chris Bohjalian (“Skeletons at the Feast”) on February 23,; and Dara Horn (“All Other Nights”) on March 9.
SPECIAL APPEARANCE: Comedian and Author Carol Leifer (“When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win: Reflections on Looking in the Mirror”) on Tuesday, February 9.

Authors & Their Books: Michael Tucker
WHAT: Actor Michael Tucker (fondly known as “Stuart Markowitz” of the hit television drama LA Law,) discusses “Family Meals: Coming Together to Care for an Aging Parent.” Tucker and his wife, actress Jill Eikenberry faced difficult decisions after her mother was widowed and began a rapid decline into dementia. With remarkable charm, sympathy and warmth, Tucker shows the ways in which those we love are our greatest assets in times of sorrow and times of joy.

WHAT: Wednesday Martin’s “Stepmonster: A New Look at Why Real Stepmothers Think, Feel and Act the Way We Do” is a ground-breaking way of understanding the tensions that seem to define relations between women and their stepchildren. Drawing from her own experiences, Martin presents a realistic look at what it means to be married to a man with children.

Phyllis & Gerry Golden The Next Generation of Popular Music”
WHAT: Marshall Turkin and the Classic Jazz Ensemble, as well as vocalist Lisanne Lyons, celebrate the life and music of composers by performing their songs and by showing historical videos. This year’s composers are: Burt Bacharach (whose compositions include classics “Do You Know the Way to San Jose,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on my Head” and “What the World Needs Now”), Henry Mancini (“Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses,” as well as theme music for the series “The Pink Panther and “Peter Gunn”) and Jerry Herman, of “Hello Dolly,” “Mame” and “La Cage Aux Folles” fame.

3nd Annual Jewish Short Play Writing Competition
WHAT: Submit an original play based on the theme of exploring an aspect of Jewish life, issues or culture either from modern or historic times. Winning entries will be performed as Staged Readings. Awards: First place $500, Second Place $300, Third Place $200, Honorable Mentions.

Fashion, Artful Furnishings, & Rock ‘N Roll”
WHAT: An opening reception and program on Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. for three exhibitions at the Levis JCC’s Nathan D. Rosen Museum Gallery. The event features a Wearable Art fashion show, a curatorial gallery walk (with artists), refreshments, and a special appearance at 3:00 p.m. by Neil Zirconia – The “Ultimate Faux Diamond” – in a concert saluting Neil Diamond. The opening is free of charge and to the public; pre-sale concert tickets are $8, $10 at the door. All works on display are available for purchase.
