25th Edition of @LiteraryFeast in #FortLauderdale raises money for @BrowardLibrary

The 25th edition of Literary Feast, a well-known community event that has brought more than 365 authors to Broward County since it began in 1988, will once again celebrate books and authors at a series of events from March 15-18, 2013.  Last year, the Broward Public Library Foundation raised more than $130,000 at Literary Feast to support both children’s and adult literacy programs and services for Broward County Library.

This year’s event has a twist – an in-depth look at the works and life of legendary author Edith Wharton. 2012 was the 150th anniversary year of her birth, and the literary world took notice.  “You know who’s hot right now?” wrote Entertainment Weekly recently.   “Edith Wharton. Even though she died 75 years ago… she’s still one of the most influential writers today.”

Four writers, all Wharton experts, will attend Literary Feast: Jennie Fields, The Age of Desire:  A Novel, Irene Goldman-Price, author of My Dear Governess: The Letters of Edith Wharton to Anna Bahlmann, Francesca Segal, author of The Innocents and Richard Guy Wilson, Edith Wharton at Home:  Life at the Mount.

More than 20 authors will be featured at this year’s event, including Bob Spitz, author of Dearie:  The Remarkable Life of Julia Child, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill founder and CEO Lowell Hawthorne, author of the memoir, The Baker’s Son and, graphic novelist Dwight Zimmerman, author of The Hammer and the Anvil:  Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and the End of Slavery in America.”

South Florida’s Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry will be featured exclusively on Sunday evening, March 17 at Feast’s Night Out poolside at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six.

“Literary Feast is crucial to sustaining the Broward Public Library Foundation’s mission to support Broward County libraries’ programs and services,” said Joseph M. Goldstein,

a partner at Shutts & Bowen LLP who is serving as Literary Feast 2013 Co-Chair, along with his wife, Mary.  “Projects such as the Summer Reading Program, Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays and computer instruction classes are supported through the dollars raised through this unique event.” More than 50 community volunteers work on behalf of Literary Feast’s five events.

Former Literary Feast author Ellen Crosby described the event, saying, “Literary Feast paired a passionate group of people who write books with a passionate group of people who read books – and want to keep their libraries alive and well.  A terrific weekend!”

During the four-day festival, the Literary Feast authors will speak to donors, students and South Florida’s book-loving community at these events:

LitLUNCH! – Friday, March 15: A luncheon featuring Lee Woodruff at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six’s revolving Pier Top restaurant overlooking scenic Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $65.

A Night of Literary Feasts – Saturday, March 16: The signature fund-raising event begins with an opportunity for ticket holders to meet all the Feast authors at a fabulous cocktail party, followed by intimate dinners featuring one or two authors hosted in private homes and upscale restaurants. Individual tickets are $175.  A limited number of special $75 cocktail reception tickets will be available.

LitLIVE! – Sunday, March 17:  This free public event features all the authors participating in a series of lectures, discussions and book signings at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center on the Davie campus of Nova Southeastern University.

Feast’s Night Out With Dave Barry – Sunday evening, March 17:  Humor columnist and prolific author Dave Barry will join Literary Feast at a poolside party at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six.  His latest book is the comic suspense novel Insane City. Tickets are $40

Novel Day for Students – Monday, March 18:  The authors will engage with students at Broward County high schools to discuss their work and the craft of writing.  The authors will also announce the winners of the annual Novel Day for Students Short Story Contest, with more than 500 students participating each year.

Long-time Literary Feast supporter Mike Jackson, CEO, AutoNation, Inc., said “A successful society is, by necessity, a literate society.  Reading is the first skill among all others, and the Broward Public Library Foundation plays an essential role in the civic, cultural and commercial well-being of our community.”

This year’s Literary Feast Title Sponsor is The Friends of the Mount, Edith Wharton’s Home, and Presenting Sponsors are AutoNation, Inc. and Nova Southeastern University

5th Anniversary Boating & Beach Bash For People With Disabilities

BOCA RATON, FL……The 5th Anniversary Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities, the largest fun-day event in the United States for people with physical and/or intellectual challenges, will once again celebrate community diversity on March 16, 2013, in Boca Raton, Florida. The event also honors the families and caregivers of attendees, and Purple Heart recipients living in South Florida. It is free to all, thanks to community support, donations and corporate sponsors.

This past March, following four years of unprecedented growth and local and national acclaim, the 2012 Bash attracted a record setting 4463 registered guests, supported by 501 volunteers. With attendance more than doubling each year since the event’s inception in 2009, organizers say the Bash has clearly hit a chord that resonates throughout South Florida’s disability community and beyond.

“We’ve been astounded by how we have been able to touch so many families and individual lives over the past five years,” says Bash founder and director Jay Van Vechten. In March of 2009, the first Bash drew 350 attendees. “We were thrilled with the turnout,” he adds. “Little did we know then what awaited us in the years that have followed. We couldn’t be happier with our growth.”

In 2010, organizers and volunteers were even more staggered when attendance jumped to 750 participants. By 2011 the Bash welcomed over 2000 men, women and children. “We were overjoyed with the response we received from the most underserved segment of our community. Our job,” Van Vechten continues, “is to treat everyone who attends like a VIP, because each of them is special. Seeing folks with unimaginable challenges and disabilities laughing and smiling, many for them for the first time, fills us with the determination to continue building this event. Hopefully one day we’ll be able to start replicating it across the nation in cities that have significant private boating communities, like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle, LA and San Francisco.

30 Donated Yachts with Certified Captains Give Half Hour Intracoastal Rides to Bash Attendees

A highlight of the annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities is the opportunity for all guests to enjoy a half hour boat ride aboard a variety of luxury yachts and motor boats, loaned for the occasion by their generous owners. Most of the boats have traditionally been donated by members of Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club. In 2012, 30 yachts, each captained by a Coast Guard certified captain and trained crew, participated. There were 2200 rides logged for the day.

Thanks to the City of Boca Raton, a highlight of the Bash is the free admission to Boca’s famed Spanish River Park, site of the event. With 90 acres of picnic grounds and lush tropical gardens straddling the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, the park is the most beautiful, publicly-accessible green belt on Florida’s Gold Coast. It offers a spectacular setting for a variety of on-land activities planned by Bash organizers. For those who wish, there’s also the option to enjoy a swim in the ocean, only feet from the event’s primary location.

Each year, guests are treated to a barbeque lunch with all the trimmings. Additionally there’s a Kids Fun Zone, where a variety of games, arts and crafts, await youngsters of all ages. In 2012 a half dozen musical acts and performance artists entertained guests. In 2013, even more acts are anticipated, as word spreads through the entertainment community about how rewarding it is for an artist to perform for people with special needs.

Also making a big splash with guests this past year were Animal Planet’s Gator Boys, complete with baby alligators, jaws taped shut. Tiny therapy ponies for petting and beautiful service dogs walked among picnickers.

A highlight for many attendees, particularly families and caregivers, is the chance to interact with exhibitors in a tented zone that includes more than 30 community service providers. Here guests learn about products and services unique to the South Florida disability community and beyond.

Private Donations, Corporate Sponsors, Strategic Partners and Volunteers Sought for 2013

”It is our immediate goal,” says Van Vechten, “to encourage private donations and corporate sponsors to help us maintain and grow the Bash in 2013. We’re also looking to build strategic partnerships with area businesses, other disability organizations and institutions. This year we’re also adding a solid committee of community-minded advisors to help us manage and grow the Bash. Finally,” he adds, “the event wouldn’t happen without volunteers helping us every step of the way. The very grass roots nature of the Bash is totally dependent on the selfless support and caring from those who annually step forward to help us.
