WHY: The recent George Zimmerman verdict will be the subject of a school town hall meeting at Whiddon-Rogers Education Center. Students and the school community will participate in a discussion sparked by the jury’s acquittal of Zimmerman on second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin. “Together We Can Make A Difference” is the theme of the forum, which will focus on generating constructive dialogue about youth, race, justice and how to prevent violent confrontations from occurring.
Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will be special guests at the school town hall meeting. Several elected officials, community leaders and activists participating in the panel discussion will include: State Representatives Gwyndolen “Gwyn” Clark-Reed and Perry Thurston; city of Fort Lauderdale’s Commissioner Bobby B. Dubose and Police Chief Frank Adderley; Attorney Johnny McCray; Chief Assistant Broward Public Defender Gordon Weekes; Bethel AME Pastor Eddy Moise, Jr.; Light of Life Worship Center Senior Pastor Dr. Clark Lazare, businessman Guy Wheeler; NAACP representative Roosevelt Walters and others. Broward County School Board members Robin Bartleman, Katherine M. Leach and Dr. Rosalind Osgood, along with other community leaders will also participate.
