DEERFIELD BEACH – The far end of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier was damaged as a result of the strong winds and waves created by Hurricane Sandy overnight Thursday and early Friday morning. The City had closed the Pier for safety reasons as of 5 PM yesterday.
During the storm, decking was lifted off the base structure, side railings were ripped away, and the framework upon which the end of the pier is built may have sustained damaged.
A structural engineer familiar with the design of the pier is scheduled to assess the damage later today and provide a report to the City. Initial estimates are that the repair could cost up to $50,000 and take 2 months to design and complete.
The damage to the ocean-end of the pier from Sandy comes just as the construction at the beginning of the pier nears completion.
The ribbon cutting ceremony for a $4.8 million project consisting of a new restaurant, bait shop, and elevated public pavilion, as well as new restroom and shower facilities for beach goers, will take place the evening of Friday, December 7.
The City does not anticipate that the repairs now needed at the end of the pier will be completed by the ribbon cutting for the Pier Entry facilities.
