Annual Broward Schools Magnet Program Showcase Dec. 8
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will hold its annual Showcase on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 5 – 9 p.m. Students and their parents are invited to this free event at Broward County Convention Center (1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) to preview the wide variety of innovative programs available in Broward’s public schools. Representatives from various programs will be on hand including Nova Schools, Broward Virtual and magnet programs. Interested in Performing & Visual Arts? How about International Baccalaureate, Pre-Law or Pre-Med? These are just a few of the areas of study offered as part of BCPS magnet programs.
Students and their parents will also have an opportunity to hear first hand about a new magnet program that will be offered at six middle schools. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is a new program that will be available at Apollo, Lauderhill, Parkway, Margate, McNicol and Silver Lakes middle schools. The exposition-style event will present more than 40 magnet schools with displays, literature, hands-on and interactive activities, and information on everything from applications to transportation. Computers will be available to parents so they can instantly apply on-line. Staff will be on hand to process application information for parents of elementary, middle and high school students. In addition, translators will be available to help those parents who speak Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole.
All Broward resident students in grades K-12 are eligible to apply to a magnet program. Students applying to kindergarten must be five years old by September 1, 2011. Applicants to middle and high school magnet programs should bring a copy of their recent report card and standardized test scores (FCAT). Applications for the 2011/12 school year will be available and can also be submitted at Showcase 2011. The application deadline is February 16, 2011.
