12-year-old shot in face dies; teen suspect gets new charges

A 12-year-old boy shot earlier this week has died from his injuries, and the 17-year-old suspect now faces new charges.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives were informed that Anthony Alejandre, 12, was declared dead at 2:30 p.m. today, Friday, at Broward General Medical Center.

On Monday, October 11, BSO deputies responded to the shooting just before 7:30 p.m. The first deputy found Alejandre, unconscious and unresponsive inside a bedroom of the home at 618 NW 1 Way. Alejandre had been shot through his right cheek and the bullet severed his spinal cord and exited his neck. He was treated on the scene by Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue and flown by BSO Air Rescue to Broward General Medical Center.

Alejandre’s neighbor, Jose Torres, 17, initially told detectives that Alejandre was playing with the gun and accidentally shot himself in the face. Torres also said he found the pistol in a park restroom. A records check revealed the weapon was stolen in a Deerfield Beach home burglary four months ago. Detectives noticed that the victim’s wound did not appear to be self-inflicted.

In an interview with detectives, Torres changed his story and said he shot Alejandre with the .38-caliber pistol and then placed the gun in the younger boy’s hand. He later changed the story again, saying Alejandro was holding the .38 when Torres pointed a loaded 9mm pistol at him and pulled the trigger.

Torres had a cache of weapons in his bedroom including knives, swords, brass knuckles and a suitcase under the bed containing five guns. Detectives also learned that Torres paid Alejandre $500 last week to allow him to stab Alejandre in the leg. The wound required seven sutures to close.

Initially charged with Attempted Manslaughter by Act with a Firearm, Torres now faces Manslaughter by Act with a Firearm and Tampering and/or Fabricating Physical Evidence charges.
