Women’s Equality Day Celebration at FAU Aug 26th, 2010

Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and other local organizations will hold a Women’s Equality Day Celebration to commemorate the 90th anniversary of women’s voting rights. The celebration will be held on Thursday, August 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The event is free and open to the public.
The program will include an introduction from Josephine Beoku-Betts, director of FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies; a welcome from FAU President Mary Jane Saunders; and a presentation from U.S. Representative Ted Deutch. Deutch will be speaking at 10:30 a.m. about the history of women’s equality and the importance of voting. There will also be a screening of the film “Iron Jawed Angels” at 11:30 a.m. The film is about the American women’s suffrage movement of the early 1900s.
Local organizations that will have exhibits at the event include the Palm Beach County National Organization for Women, the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County, the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women, the Equal Rights Alliance, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Palm Beach County, among others. Attendees are encouraged to dress in white and purple as did the suffragists. For more information about the Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies in FAU’s Dorothy F.
