Proposed FEC rail line includes two stops in Oakland Park
Oakland Park City Commissioners approved a resolution on August 4 supporting a proposed passenger rail line that would traverse the Southeast Florida region along the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway corridor.
“The need for passenger transit service along the east side of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties has long been apparent to transportation planning agencies,” according to the resolution approved the City Commission. “Implementation of a FEC-based community rail system with one or more stops in Oakland Park will contribute significantly to the City’s future fiscal well-being.”
Oakland Park is in the South Corridor section which runs between a site near the Miami-Dade Government Center and the Pompano Beach Tri-Rail station via the FEC rail line.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s South Florida East Coast Corridor (SFECC) Study is also supported by the Broward League of Cities.
“The scope of the transit analysis study is to develop and analyze alternatives that potentially integrate passenger and freight transportation along the SFECC, which is centered along the existing FEC Railway,” said Oakland Park senior planner Richard A.
Buckeye. “So far the study has identified 17 general areas in Broward County for rail station locations. The station locations were evaluated based on potential ridership, land use, and connectivity to the east and west.”
Two of the rail station locations under consideration are in Oakland Park – Commercial Boulevard near North Dixie Highway and a downtown station between NE 38 Street and NE 34 Court.
Specific station locations will be discussed at public meetings that will be scheduled by the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Board of County Commissioners. The meetings are tentatively scheduled for September (MPO)
and November (Broward County Commission). Learn more about the study at http://www.sfeccstudy.com/. There are multiple public hearings scheduled by those conducting the study in September listed here.
