Tamarac Certified a Gold Level Green Local Government
The Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. (FGBC) has officially certified the City of Tamarac as a Green Local Government at the Gold level. Fewer than 13 local governments throughout the state hold the Gold level designation, and Tamarac is one of 3 in South Florida. Tamarac was the first local government in South Florida to be certified as “green” by the FGBC in May 2008.
In awarding the Gold certification, the FGBC acknowledged the City’s continued green initiatives and commitment to the environment which include a variety of energy reducing measures, free and discounted water saving devices, as well the abundance of “Florida Friendly” certified medians, streetscapes and facility landscaping. Several new initiatives within the City helped to boost Tamarac to the Gold level such as: a community garden project that was originally planted on Earth Day 2009; developing a plan, with assistance from ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at City facilities and
within the City’s fleet of vehicles, providing commuter incentive for employees and employing green cleaning and maintenance procedures.
“I’m proud of this latest accomplishment,” said Tamarac Mayor Beth Talabisco. “Our City’s commitment to the environment and leading our community to ‘go green’ by example is unwavering. I’m thrilled we’ve reached the GOLD level and look forward to continuing this journey.”

Can’t speak for the rest of the article, but I would like to know where the garden is planted. I heard there was a community garden in Tamarac along Pine Island that went fallow in the early spring due to lack of community involvement. I hope that’s not the same garden given a temporary makeover for a photo-op.
