Broward teachers taking to the streets in protest again
From the Broward Teacher’s Union:
As the Florida House version of Senate Bill 6, House Bill 7189, comes to a full vote this afternoon, Broward County teachers, parents and community members will take to the streets in protest. Dozens of protesters are expected to gather at 4:30 p.m. today, Thursday, April 8 until 5:30 p.m. in front of the BTU Office in Tamarac at 6000 North University Drive in opposition to this historically bad legislation and proposed art, music and physical education cuts in Broward schools.
While teachers shift their fight to Governor Charlie Crist, BTU leaders have also declared Friday, April 9 as Black Friday. Employees at virtually all Broward schools have pledged to wear black apparel in protest of SB 6/ HB 7189. They will hand out informational leaflets to parents dropping off students before and after school educating them about the legislation and encouraging them to call the governor for help.
“We will never stop fighting this bad legislation,” BTU President Pat Santeramo said. “School employees remain committed to ensuring every Broward County student has the opportunity to succeed.”
Senate Bill 6 and House Bill 7189 would impose an illogical and divisive statewide performance pay system, strip local school boards of authority and penalize schools. The bill will be devastating to Broward schools and students.
At the same time due to a lack of state funding, the School Board of Broward County has proposed cutting vital programs like art, music and physical education and eliminating other specials as a cost-savings. BTU leaders realize that these classes are an integral part of student development and maintain that there is a better way to reduce spending and save these important programs for students.
