Fort Lauderdale police investigating traffic fatality

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is investigating a traffic fatality that occurred on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at approximately 10:15 P.M.  The accident took place at Northwest 19 Street and Powerline Road.

Investigators have discovered that Sandra Karalekas, W/F, 05/17/1988, was operating a 2001 Honda Prelude.  The Prelude was stopped for a red light at the intersection of Northwest 19 Street and Powerline Road in the center eastbound through lane.  James Leas, W/M, 07/20/1949 was operating a 2005 white Ford van.  The van was traveling east in the center eastbound through lane and failed to stop.  Leas failure to stop his van resulted in him colliding into the rear of the Prelude.  After the collision, the van continued traveling to the northeast corner where it hit a large tree head-on.

Isadore Balzano, 12/16/1954, was a rear passenger inside of the Prelude, who was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.  All other occupants of the Prelude were transported to Broward General Medical Center.  Karalekas suffered head trauma from the collision and is currently listed in critical condition.

Prior to the crash, it appears that Leas may have suffered a medical trauma, causing him to pass out behind the wheel.  The investigation into this fatality continues and is on-going.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Cindy Love at or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
