Dania Beach man killed in paragliding accident
A Dania Beach man paragliding with his wife on Christmas morning died after losing control of the motorized flying device and falling into the Atlantic Ocean.
Around 9:20 a.m., Roberto Fernandez and his wife, Catya Fernandez, were flying in a tandem paraglider near the Dania Pier when he somehow lost control and flew into the water. They were both strapped in to the single-engine device that has a parachute attached. Roberto Fernandez was in charge of the controls, and his wife was seated in front of him. When they hit the water, she was able to get out of the harness, but he was not.
Dania Beach lifeguards dragged Roberto Fernandez from the water, and Dania Beach Fire Rescue workers tried to revive him. However, he was pronounced dead a short time later at Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital. Catya Fernandez was treated and released from the same hospital. Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives will try to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. The Broward County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
