Armed assailant sexually molests child in park

A 9-year-old boy playing with his younger sister in a local park told detectives he was sexually battered Monday evening by an armed man.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the boy and his sister went to Sunview Park, which is within walking distance of their home. The boy later told detectives that a man with a gun approached him and forced him into a handicapped port-o-let at the park. The man sexually battered the child inside the port-o-let and released him.

The assailant then allowed the children to walk home. BSO investigators made contact with local sex offenders and predators Monday night and will continue to do so throughout the course of the investigation. A bloodhound was used to track the suspect, but the dog picked up on the scent of the children and led detectives to their home.

The children described the man as tall and slim, with white or light brown skin and a clean-shaven face. He spoke English but is possibly Hispanic. He appeared to be in his 20s or 30s and wore jeans, a black jacket and a black ball cap with white lettering.

The boy was treated and released from Plantation General Hospital before being transported to the Sexual Assault Treatment Center.

Anyone who knows anything about this assailant is asked to call BSO Det. Julie Bower at 954-321-4242 or anonymously report the information to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

You have to ask yourself what kind of policies are in place in this state to allow something like this to happen. Where once these types of crimes were an anomoly, they are now daily occurrances in our society. After the outrage subsides, I hope many of you will start to look at the wheels that truly turn in this state that allows men like the one profiled above to freely roam our streets to feed off our children.
Its time to stop depending on those who we elect or pay to do the jobs they are entrusted to do. Its obvious we must now be the ones to police our own streets and keep our eyes wide open in the protection of our children and neighbors.
