A1A in Broward designated scenic highway
It was a grassroots effort that began many years ago. Broward County residents formed a Corridor Advisory Group to ask the State of Florida to officially designate State Road A1A a “scenic highway.” Last month, that request was granted and the 23-mile corridor that runs from Deerfield Beach to Hallandale Beach is now a Florida Scenic Highway.
“This sends a national message that A1A in Broward County is exceptional in its heritage, its natural resources and that it is an area that people will want to see and one that will be preserved for future generations,” said Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl.
Criteria to qualify for the Florida Scenic Highway designation includes that the highway corridor “must tell a story” of the region and that the corridor must exhibit “significant, exceptional and distinctive features.”
Designated scenic highways are identified on local, state and federal maps. Travelers interested in sightseeing are often drawn to highways with “scenic” designations. Markers identifying scenic roadways and other historical signage explaining the corridors significance are placed along designated scenic routes.
Scenic Highways designation yields several broad-based benefits. Establishing a vision for the corridor helps to ensure that the “quality of life” in South Florida can be maintained. The integration of program and funding sources for designated corridors promotes resource protection, economic development and increased tourism for surrounding communities.
The Florida Scenic Highways Program was developed to preserve, maintain, protect and enhance Florida’s outstanding historical, archaeological, recreational, cultural, natural and scenic resources. The State Road A1A Corridor showcases the diverse essence of Broward County and South Florida’s exceptional resources, history and beauty.
