NSU to be Honored by Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida

Submitted by BrowardNETOnline on November 10, 2009 – 10:49 pmNo Comment

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will be recognized as a “beacon of education” by the Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida at its seventh annual gala on Nov. 14. The PR Bar will also honor Larry Calderon, Ed.D., vice president for community and governmental affairs at NSU, for his involvement in ensuring access to education.

For its role in educating Hispanics, NSU has been certified as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. Through this designation, the university has received Title V grants in excess of $8 million, with the grants being used to expand NSU’s services for undergraduate Hispanic students. In addition, the most recent Title V award will provide for the development of a new Doctoral Fellows Program with a concentration in Strategic Transformational Leadership for graduate students.

Dr. Calderon was instrumental in NSU earning the designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and earning the grants. In order to be considered for the grant, an educational institution must have at least 25 percent Hispanic population enrolled in undergraduate studies and demonstrate significant need in providing access to the Hispanic community and a commitment to address the need long-term.

NSU also ranks first in the nation in the number of doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanics and the number of first professional degrees awarded to Hispanics, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics 2009 edition. NSU ranks second in awarding master’s degrees to Hispanics.

The theme of this year’s PR Bar Gala is “Education: Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.” Also being honored is Aspira of Florida, a nonprofit organization that provides mentoring to middle and high school students. The gala will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Coral Gables. More information on the gala is available by contacting Marisol Gomez at 305-448-4010 or mgomez@gambalombana.com.
