New mayor, vice mayor of Broward; former mayor addresses current state of Broward County

commission unanimously voted to appoint Dist. 4 commissioner Ken Keechl as mayor.

“Ken is a credit to our community and it is (his) turn for leadership,” said outgoing mayor Stacy Ritter. “The role of mayor is more involved, more demanding on time…good luck. I wish you well.”

Keechl spoke immediately after her, saying it was a blessing to serve the past three years on the commission, and for the past year as vice mayor.

“During the last three years we’ve spent hundreds of hours together and made thousands of decisions—and as a county commissioner, the stakes are high—the operation has moved as a collegial body and has served the residents of Broward County,” said Keechl. “I am proud of the direction we have taken.”

Keechl noted he has gone through three (difficult) budget processes and that the county budget has been reduced from $3.6 billion to $3.3 billion, adding he plans to start the next year’s fiscal budget Wednesday.

“In the last three years, we’ve made some necessary changes in infrastructure, and must continue the expansion of the south runway which includes minimizing the effect on property owners,” added Keechl, before recognizing staff, family and friends.

Commissioner Sue Gunzburger was appointed vice mayor. She represents  District 6, which oversees Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Pembroke Pines.

“Thank you—I enjoy every minute of serving the people of Broward County,” said Gunzburger. “Making this a better place than how we found it, that is our mission and I plan to continue doing that working side-by-side with our new mayor.”
