Tamarac to honor local Broward hero who saved three lives
The City of Tamarac’s Mayor and Commission will proclaim October 14, 2009 as Maria Londono Day in recognition of her heroic actions in saving the lives of three individuals.
On the morning of April 2, 2009, Ms. Londono arrived at work at the home of her employer, Lillian Corenthal, to find a harrowing scene – three individuals, Ms. Corenthal, her daughter Roberta Brugg, and her son Warren Corenthal, lying unconscious. Not knowing what had happened and without regard for her safety, Maria leapt into action. She was able to wake Mr. Corenthal and call 911. Once Tamarac Fire Rescue arrived on the scene it was determined that Ms. Corenthal and her children suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by an automobile that had been inadvertently left running in the garage overnight. Without the quick actions and clear thinking of Ms. Londono, the outcome of the situation could have been much different.
Ms. Corenthal was transported to a local hospital while her children were treated on-site. All three survived the incident and fully recovered.
“This is an amazing story,” stated Commissioner Harry Dressler, “Maria was cool and collected under the intense pressure of the situation and we honor her for this amazingly selfless act that saved the lives of three people.”
Ms. Londono will be presented with a proclamation at the regularly scheduled Commission Meeting on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 7:00pm at Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 88th Avenue, Tamarac, Florida. Ms. Corenthal, her son Warren, and daughter Roberta (who is flying in from New York) will also be in attendance for the presentation.
