Walk like MADD – event raises money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Michael J. Satz, State Attorney for Florida’s 17th Judicial Circuit, will be the Honorary Chair of south Florida’s first Walk Like MADD—an event for which Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti and Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw are serving as Co-Chairs to raise funds for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).  Walk Like MADD, a long-standing tradition for the national organization, makes its debut in south Florida at Tradewinds Park at 3600 West Sample Road in Coconut Creek on Saturday, October 31st.  Sheriffs Bradshaw and Lamberti have agreed to combine their efforts, and State Attorney Satz has agreed to be Honorary Chair of the event, in the interest of raising awareness and funds for MADD’s local efforts to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.

“MADD has always been a valued community partner of the Broward Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement nationwide,” said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti.  “I applaud their awareness initiatives here in south Florida and I will continue to do my part to focus on the dangers and serious aftermath problems associated with driving while drunk,” he said.  Meanwhile “in Palm Beach County my office continues to enjoy a strong working relationship with our local and state MADD,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.  “Every DUI deputy knows every local MADD member,” he said, “their personal sacrifice reminds us that each DUI arrest we make may have saved a life.”  “There dedication is our commitment,” he added.

With a lofty goal of $60,000.00, local MADD officials are proud to announce Kiwanis of Fort Lauderdale, Denny’s, SEI Wireless Solutions, Florida Medical Center, and others as sponsors.  This family event takes place on Halloween with registration at 7:00am, an opening ceremony at 8:00am, and the 5K walk beginning at 8:30am.  For information on participating, the public can call 561.640.5200 in Palm Beach County, 954.229.0884 in Broward County or visit www.walklikemadd.org and click Palm Beach/Broward counties.  Or e-mail Randy.Rogers@madd.org.

Founded in 1980, MADD’s mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.  MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving calls for intensive, high visibility law enforcement, mandatory ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, development of advanced vehicle-based technology and community support.  MADD is a 501(c)3 non-profit grassroots organization with approximately 400 offices and 2 million members and supporters nationwide.  For more information, call 1-800-GET-MADD or visit www.madd.org.
