Broward woman arrested for elderly abuse

Attorney General Bill McCollum recently announced a Broward County woman is in custody on charges she abused an elderly nursing home resident under her care. Eronie Deverlus was arrested this morning by law enforcement officers with the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
An investigation conducted by the Attorney General’s Patient Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (PANE) Team revealed that Deverlus, 50, was employed as a nursing assistant at Manor Pines Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Fort
Lauderdale. According to a witness, Deverlus became angry with a 65-year-old resident who suffers from Parkinson’s disease and struck the woman in the face. She was fired shortly thereafter.
Deverlus is charged with one count of abuse of an elderly person, a third-degree felony.  If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.  The case will be prosecuted by the Broward County State Attorney’s Office for the 17th Judicial Circuit.
The Attorney General’s PANE Project plays a key role in detecting abuse and neglect of elderly and disabled patients, helping to ensure that efficient and effective health care is being provided. The PANE team operates statewide under the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
