Detectives believe that Ricky Von Welch and Lorenzo Jones, a college student home for the summer, argued outside of Swifty’s Apartments on Northwest 31st Avenue in Central Broward. Von Welch lives in the building with his girlfriend, and Jones was visiting there during his break from school. The argument became violent, and Von Welch shot Jones once in the abdomen. Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue transported Jones to Broward General Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.

BSO closed down Northwest 31st Avenue for several hours while they searched the area for Von Welch, who witnesses saw run inside the apartment building. BSO’s SWAT team cleared the building just before 6 p.m.

Anyone with information about Von Welch’s whereabouts can report it to Det. Theo Woulard at (954) 321-4224 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at www.BrowardCrimeStoppers.org.
