Almost two tons food collected for local food pantries

Throughout the month of March, Broward County sponsored the “March on Hunger” Food Drive. Collection boxes were set up in County government buildings, libraries, courthouses and other facilities. Broward County employees, residents, cities and businesses were invited to participate.

When all was said and done, nearly two tons of food, 3,800 pounds, was collected and distributed to the Cooperative Feeding Program and Daily Bread Food Bank. All of the food was distributed in Broward County.
“People were very generous and I hope this encourages people to make food donations throughout the year,” said Broward County Mayor Stacy Ritter. “Our food pantries are incredibly low and they are feeding more people than ever.”
Participating cities were Margate, 350 pounds; Weston, 100 pounds; Lauderdale Lakes, 50 pounds; Wilton Manors, 37 pounds; and West Park, results not available. Several businesses held their own food drives, including Falcon Aerospace in Davie, where employees collected 370 pounds of food.
“We consider 1,000 pounds of donations from a food drive to be successful,” said Marti Forman, CEO of the Cooperative Feeding Program. “To get nearly two tons in this time of need is so very helpful. We’re feeding more than 800 people a day, every day.”
The Cooperative Feeding Program is one of the largest food banks in Broward County. In the past several years, the Cooperative Feeding Program has provided millions of meals to Broward County residents. The program also helps families to access services that can help them through financially difficult times.
The Daily Bread Food Bank, a not-for-profit organization, helps other South Florida not-for-profit organizations feed needy people and improve their lives. They have locations in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. The Daily Bread Food Bank is the South Florida affiliate of Feeding America, a member of the Florida Association of Food Banks and the largest food bank in the state of Florida.
