Food for Thought at Oceans Beach Bar Bistro

Peter Leonard, Food for Thought radio show host has fun on air with Oceans owner Danielle Williams.

What’s the best restaurant to eat at? Who’s the new chef at your favorite? Are there any new restaurants?  If you tune in to the Food for Thought Radio show every Thursday night, you could answer these questions about the local South Florida market.

Led by Peter Leonard, a 23-year veteran of the radio industry, the Food for Thought radio show comes on the airwaves live from 6-8 p.m. each Thursday from Oceans on Deerfield Beach (http://www.oceans234.com). Though the project is in its infancy (it’s only been going four months), Leonard is excited about the project he started after leaving sports-casting.

“When I started my stint at a sports station, we were the only one—but now there’s five of them,”  said Leonard. “No one was doing a live food radio show—and you can’t go an hour without seeing some food show. I saw a void at the local level and I love to go out to eat.”

So Leonard localized the concept, focusing only on South Florida restaurants—and not just traditional restaurant/bar venues.

While we were there, Leonard checked in with a live restaurant critic at a stadium in Key Biscayne (the offerings were of a higher quality than the typical stadium, with more upscale offerings), the brand new Cantina Laredo in Hallandale (see food review here and drink review here), The Whale Raw Bar & Grill, and of course, their host, Oceans.

Sitting at a table near the front of Oceans, a bar/restaurant literally overlooking the ocean with a fabulous sushi bar up front (), Leonard leapfrogs the listener across the topics as he checks in with critics on scene at the different places, usually three or four each week. Each week on his Facebook page, Leonard picks one lucky listener for a “Secret Supper,” giving them a free dinner for two, with the stipulation that he checks in with them at the beginning, middle and end of the meal. The dinners are sponsored by PremierDiningFlorida.com, an online discount dining guide. Sometimes he chats live with the chef, sometimes the servers and always the critic who lets listeners know what they think of the service, presentation, ambiance and food.

“We touch on where to go out to eat, but also recipes, food events and eating healthy,” said Leonard, who describes some of the dishes so deliciously you can feel your mouth water, as he takes a swig of his beloved Duke’s Sweet Tea (learn more about this drink by clicking here).

Of course, watching plates of fresh fried calamari coming out the kitchen at Oceans to sample doesn’t help the hunger factor any more. (Get a $30 Oceans gift certificate for $15 by clicking here).

“Peter always handled buying my radio time before, so when asked me to host a live radio show, I said let’s do it,” said Danielle Williams, owner of Oceans. “People think it’s really cool.”

Tune in weekly online at http://thefoodforthoughtradioshow.com/ or on the air at 1470AM every Thursday night from 6-8 p.m. and be sure to stop by their This week, they Secret Supper critics will be visiting Cj’s Draft House.
