Tamarac to dedicate new public art, “Under the Shadow of a Big Tree”

The City of Tamarac invites the public to join the Mayor and Commission for the official dedication of “Under the Shadow of a Big Tree”, by Ilan Averbuch, at Tephford Park (). The dedication will take place on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 5:15 p.m.
Mr. Averbuch is a world-renowned New York based sculptor who works with stone, iron, and wood – making use of many recycled elements. “Under the Shadow of a Big Tree” was chosen by Tamarac’s Public Art Committee, and ultimately approved by the City Commission, from among 120 submissions by artists from around the world.
Tamarac’s Public Art program is funded through the Public Art Fund which was established by the City Commission in 2005 with the passage of the Public Art Ordinance. The ordinance requires that 1% of the construction value of new projects or improvements be set aside for public art. These funds can not be used by the City for any other purpose and, if they go unused, must be returned to the developer or property owners.
“This is an amazing sculpture by an amazing artist,” said Tamarac Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco. “I could not be more thrilled to be a part of presenting this work of art to the community. It is a beautiful addition to our growing collection.”
Following the dedication, the public is invited to join the artist, along with sculptor Jane DeDecker, the artist who created “Dawn and Dusk” (the two sculptures located adjacent to the walkway between the Tamarac Community Center and Tamarac Branch of the Broward County Library on Commercial Boulevard) for a discussion on Public Art. The discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Tamarac Park Recreation Center (7501 N. University Drive).
