99 cent burglars left with chump change; with video

Two smash-and-grab burglars used a cement parking stone to break the glass front door of a Lauderdale Lakes dollar store Tuesday morning and walked out with the cash register. Luckily, there was only about $20 in  change  in the cash drawer and surveillance video captured the entire escapade. [bubblecast id=284767]

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., before 99-Cent Plus in Oakland Lakes Plaza had opened for the day, a white Toyota backed into a parking space in front of the store. Two men got out of the car, and one threw a small, triangle-shaped, cement parking stone through the front door. One of the burglars stayed outside, and the other went in and lifted the register.

One of the burglars wore a white shirt, dark gym shorts, dark sneakers and cap and had a full beard. The other wore a white, long-sleeved shirt, white sneakers, dark pants and dark cap.

Anyone who recognizes the burglars can contact Det. William Upegui, Jr. at or anonymously report the information to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS or online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.
