Sunrise to Host September 11 Remembrance Ceremony

On Friday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m., the City will host a Remembrance Ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on America. The ceremony will take place in the rotunda of the Sunrise Civic Center (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard), and will be attended by City officials, as well as representatives from the Police and Fire-Rescue departments. The event will feature remarks by distinguished speakers, the presentation of colors, instrumental and vocal selections, and light refreshments. For more information, call (

Ballad of America: Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band. Celebrate America with a performance of traditional folk songs. This program weaves a history of the pioneers, cowboys and soldiers who helped shape our country – using music to bridge the gap between generations. Word Up! Poetry Slam Auditions on September 17
Broward County middle- and high-school students are invited to audition for Word Up! – a poetry slam with a positive twist. Be prepared to perform an original three-minute poem on education, , empowerment or a theme that’s uplifting to you.

Auditions will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard, Sunrise 33351). Up to 50 poets can register, but only 20 will be selected to advance to the Word Up! Poetry Slam finals on Friday, October 2. Contest rules and a registration form are available at

The audition and the finals will be emceed by Ray “Knowledge” Dominguez, executive director of the award-winning Write Side Poets. The winner of Word Up! will earn the opportunity to compete at Dominguez’s “Louder Than Life” Poetry Slam. Other prizes include cash and tickets to sporting events.

The Word Up! Poetry Slam is presented by the City of Sunrise Foundation in partnership with the Write Side Poets. “The Beauty of Sport” at the Sunrise Civic Center Art
On Friday, September 18, at 6:30 p.m., the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery will host an opening reception for “The Beauty of Sport,” featuring the work of Mary Schilpp. Her collection of images reveals the unusual and artistic elements of athletics.

Schilpp is an award-winning creative photographer with 25 years of experience. She earned a BFA in photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and has since built an impressive career. Mary’s photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including ESPN the Magazine, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Women, TENNIS and USTA Magazine.
