On Friday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m., the City will host a Remembrance Ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on America. The ceremony will take place in the rotunda of the Sunrise Civic Center (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard), and will be attended by City officials, as well as representatives from the Police and Fire-Rescue departments. September 11, 2001: A Juried Art Show. View the work of local artists, inspired by the tragic events of 9/11. Ballad of America: Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band. Celebrate America with a performance of traditional folk songs. This program weaves a history of the pioneers, cowboys and soldiers who helped shape our country – using music to bridge the gap between generations. The show is scheduled for Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard). Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for children. Auditions will be held on Thursday, September 17, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard, Sunrise 33351). Up to 50 poets can register, but only 20 will be selected to advance to the Word Up! Poetry Slam finals on Friday, October 2. Contest rules and a registration form are available at www.cityofsunrisefoundation.org.
The audition and the finals will be emceed by Ray “Knowledge” Dominguez, executive director of the award-winning Write Side Poets. The winner of Word Up! will earn the opportunity to compete at Dominguez’s “Louder Than Life” Poetry Slam. Other prizes include cash and tickets to sporting events.
The Word Up! Poetry Slam is presented by the City of Sunrise Foundation in partnership with the Write Side Poets.
