Broward County Commission to Hold Public Hearing September 14 on Proposed Bus Service Reductions and Fare Increases

Broward County TransitThe Broward County Commission will hold a public hearing at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at the Broward County Governmental Center, Room 422, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, to receive public comments on proposed schedule reductions and bus fare increases to Broward County Transit (BCT).

Following is a brief description of the proposed service reductions, effective October 31, 2010:

Proposed Service Reduction Saturday Nights:
After 9 p.m.: Routes 4, 5, 16, 20, 48 and 83
After 10 p.m.: Route 9
After 11 p.m.: Routes 7, 10, 11, 14, 22, 28, 30, 31, 40, 50 and 81

Proposed Service Reduction Weeknights:
After 9 p.m.: Routes 16, 48 and 83
After 10 p.m.: Routes 4 and 9
After 11 p.m.: Routes 7, 10, 11, 14, 22, 28, 30, 31, 50, 60 and 81

Proposed Discontinued Weekend Service:
Saturday/Sunday: Route 88
Sunday: Routes16 and 48

Proposed Route Eliminations:
Routes 3, 15, 17, 23, 56 and 57

Proposed Headway (Frequency) Adjustments:
Increase Saturday Headway from 40 to 60 minutes – Routes 6, 42 and 83
Increase Saturday Headway from 30 to 40 minutes – Route 11
Increase Saturday Headway from 30 to 45 minutes – Route 31
Increase Sunday Headway from 40 to 60 minutes – Route 2

Proposed Route Realignments:
Route 36 and Route 81 – These routes will be realigned to provide options for passengers affected by the proposed elimination of Route 56.

Following is a description of the proposed fare increases, effective October 1, 2010:
The regular, one-way bus fare will increase from $1.50 to $1.75; the reduced, one-way fare for seniors age 65 years and over, youth age 18 years and under, and the disabled/Medicare passengers will increase from $.75 to $.85. Children 40 inches tall and under will still ride free.

The price of all BCT bus passes will increase. The 10-Ride pass will increase from $13 to $16. The All-Day Regular pass will increase from $3.50 to $4 and the All-Day Reduced pass for seniors age 65 years and over, youth age 18 years and under, and the disabled/Medicare passengers will increase from $2.50 to $3.

The 31-Day Adult pass will increase from $52 to $58, and the 31-Day Reduced pass for seniors age 65 years and over, youth age 18 years and under, and the disabled/Medicare passengers will increase from $26 to $29. The 31-Day College Student pass will increase from $26 to $40 and the Seven-Day pass will increase from $13 to $16.

All current bus passes will continue to work through their expiration date. BCT’s transfer fee structures to and from Miami-Dade, Palm Tran and Tri-Rail transit systems will remain the same.

Persons with disabilities who require special accommodations to participate in the public hearing should call or TTY) at least 48 hours prior to the meeting.
