Broward crook captures money intended for church; with video

Broward Sheriff’s Office robbery detectives are releasing surveillance video in the hopes of identifying a cold-hearted crook who robbed an elderly woman as she was collecting money for her church outside a Central Broward convenience store.

The robbery occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, August 12 at Rusty’s convenience store at 981 NW 27 Avenue near Fort Lauderdale. The unidentified suspect is seen pacing back and forth in front of the store, and then suddenly snatching the victim’s canister before running away.

The victim, 77-year-old Estella Thomas, was not injured. Thomas told BSO investigators she was sitting near the store’s entrance collecting money for her church in a white canister with cardboard center and metal top and bottom.

BSO robbery detectives said the suspect may live or hangout in the Madison Apartments located just across from the store. Witnesses said the robber is a black male, about 5’10” tall, with a thin build, last seen wearing black knee-length shorts, no shirt, a black baseball cap and black Reebok high-top sneakers with white trim.
