Dan Marino named Point of Light for Disability awareness month

Governor Charlie Crist has recognized Dan Marino of Weston as a Point of Light for Disability Awareness Month.

“Over the past 18 years, Dan has devoted time and resources to autism research and the development of programs for persons with disabilities,” said Governor Crist. “His passion and dedication has led to innovative advancements in treatment and improved the quality of life of thousands of individuals.”

Marino established the Dan Marino Foundation with his wife, Claire, in 1992.  Marino is committed to providing services that improve the lives of persons with disabilities.  Through the foundation, Marino created Life Launch and Summer Steps, which provide children and young adults with social and life-skills training. He also instituted the Open Door Café program to help students with developmental disabilities gain employment opportunities and develop successful business skills.  In 1998, Marino expanded his foundation to include the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center and in 2005 the Marino Autism Research Institute. Since the foundation’s inception, Marino has raised $28 million to fund medical research, the MCH Dan Marino Center, and the foundation’s numerous programs. AAA Auto Club South is the supporting sponsor of the Governor’s Points of Light Award.   Walt Disney World is an in-kind supporter.  This program recognizes Florida residents who demonstrate exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly.  A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. Florida’s Foundation, formerly the Volunteer Florida Foundation, manages the program. For more information, or to submit a nomination, go to www.FloridasFoundation.org
