An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.  Accreditation is the certification by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards.  Schools, universities, and hospitals are some of the most well known organizations that are required to maintain accreditation.  Law enforcement agencies in Florida can now attain accredited status through CFA.  This will be the first accreditation for WMPD.  Accreditation is a voluntary process – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.   Accreditation status is good for three years, at which time an agency can apply for renewal.

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from around the State of Florida.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, observe the day to day operations of the Department, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.  Once the assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the Commission, whose members will then decide if the agency is to receive accreditation status.
