Coral Springs commission meeting Wednesday to appoint replacements for suspended commissioners

The Coral Springs City Commission will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 6 p.m. in City Hall Commission Chambers to address the process for filling the seats of suspended Commissioners Vince Boccard and Tom Powers.

On Monday, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office filed second degree misdemeanor charges against Boccard and Powers for violations of the Sunshine Law, which prohibits City Commissioners from discussing City business outside of a public forum. Later in the day, the Governor, pursuant to his authority under Florida State Statutes, issued Executive Orders immediately suspending Boccard and Powers from their positions as City Commissioners.

“This incident will not affect the delivery of municipal services to our community. We will effectively manage our way through this difficult situation,” City Manager Michael Levinson said.

To address the process of selecting individuals to serve in Commission Seat 2 and Commission Seat 5 during the period of these suspensions, the City will act in accordance with the requirements of the City Charter and Florida law, which includes the City Commission soliciting letters of interest from eligible, interested parties to fill the two seats on a temporary basis. Those persons temporarily appointed by majority vote will serve the remaining term of office assigned to their seat, or until the suspended Commissioner is entitled to return to office.

“I am deeply saddened by the news. Professionally our City will persevere,” Mayor Scott J. Brook said.

Boccard and Powers have retained independent defense counsel to represent them against these charges. Any additional questions may be directed to the City Attorney’s Office at
