Ron Klein responds to Obama’s speech

From the office of Ron Klein after President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

Congressman Ron Klein (FL-22) called for action to reduce our country’s deficit following the State of the Union address, delivered by President Barack Obama to a joint session of Congress this evening. Klein, who will be introducing a three-pronged strategy to bring down our national deficit next week, stressed the need for fiscal responsibility in the year ahead.

“Tonight, President Obama made it clear that his first priority is creating jobs in communities like South Florida, and that’s the way it should be,” Klein said. “We absolutely must continue working to create jobs and turn the tide towards economic recovery. But I strongly believe we must also start to turn our focus towards reducing the monstrous national deficit and returning to balanced budgets. President Obama’s announced spending freeze is a good start towards that goal, and I am glad he raised the issue tonight. In South Florida, we know that tough times mean tightening our belts and that we can’t buy more than we can afford. It’s how we run our household budgets and our businesses, and our government should be no different.”

President Obama covered the need to stand with middle class families, and to focus on the needs of Main Street rather than Wall Street. Obama called for real tax relief for the middle class and a serious investment in our small businesses, along with financial reforms that hold people who abused the system and broke the law on Wall Street accountable.

“I heard a real plan to put our focus where it belongs: on the needs of working families and small businesses, rather than on Wall Street,” Klein said. “Our small businesses are the key to job creation and economic recovery in our community, and I will continue to do whatever it takes to fight for them every day.”

In addition, the President called for bipartisanship in the year ahead, and urged Americans to work together to get things done.

“I was glad to hear President Obama focus on bipartisanship and working together,” Klein said. “The only way to solve problems is to have everyone at the table – Democrats, Republicans and Independents. The sooner we make that happen, the better off we all are as Americans.”
