Tamarac woman commits suicide when being evicted from home

A Tamarac woman, who was being evicted from her home for failing to pay her rent, barricaded herself and took her own life on Monday.

At about 1 p.m. on June 29, a real estate agent, locksmith and movers (to assist with placing the contents of the house outside) arrived at 6902 NW 79 Street in Tamarac to conduct the final phase of the eviction. When the tenant, Heather Newnam, answered the door, she said she needed a moment to secure her dogs.

Witnesses said they thought they heard a shot fired. The Broward Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was summoned to the scene.

Shortly after 4 p.m. when SWAT team members made entry into the home they found the woman deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Per departmental procedure, BSO’s Homicide Unit will investigate the case.
