“Bodies of Art” International conference

The Center for Body, Mind and Culture and the Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University are hosting an international conference titled, “Bodies of Art,” from  December 1 through 3, on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

The conference will examine the various ways artists use bodies, such as objects of representation as sensory, subjective instruments for creative perception and imagination, and as media for their own performance art. Combining the fields of art theory, art criticism and art practice, the conference will feature two internationally renowned speakers: Linda Nochlin, the Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Modern Art from NYU and the world-famous Parisian artist ORLAN, whose artistic interventions on her own body have been extremely influential and widely discussed.

Nochlin will lecture on Wednesday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. in FAU’s Social Sciences Building, room 250.

ORLAN’s presentation will be on Thursday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Schmidt Center Gallery public space, as part of the opening of an exhibition of her surgery-performance photos that is being presented by FAU’s University Galleries.

The exhibition, which is curated by Erica Ando, a Ph.D. student in the arts track of the doctoral program in comparative studies in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Art and Letters, runs from Thursday, December 2 through Saturday, January 22, 2011. ORLAN’s visit is being supported by the French government through its cultural offices in Miami.

The two-day conference, timed to coincide with the international Miami-Basel art fair, will include speakers from diverse disciplines, including art history, philosophy and sociology, who come from important American universities, such as the University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, Penn State, NYU, Indiana University, as well as from renowned universities in France, Canada, Italy, Germany and Australia.

“I am extremely pleased that the Center is organizing this important conference with FAU’s dynamic and recently renamed Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” said Dr. Richard Shusterman,Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and director of the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture. “Working together has been a wonderful experience because of our strong convergence of interests in embodiment and culture. I am also very grateful that the French government is also involved in this enterprise. This is the sixth international conference of the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture since it was established in 2007, and it is already the third in which the French government has helped us.”

The Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies was founded in 1986. The Center offers a M.A. degree in women’s studies, as well as a graduate certificate and an undergraduate certificate.  The Center for Body, Mind and Culture is committed to the project of enhancing global understanding through research, international scholars and international conferences with transcultural themes.

There is no conference registration fee; however, participants need to register in advance. To register or for more information on the conference, visit http://www.fau.edu/bodymindculture/Conferences.php , email or call 561-297-0851.
