Parkland Obtains 2010 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant

The City of Parkland City Commission on July 21, 2010 authorized the City to enter into an agreement with the State of Florida. Executive Office of the Governor and the Florida Energy and Climate Commission.  The grant, in the amount of $180,000, will allow the City of Parkland to replace existing sports field lighting at Terramar Park with more energy efficient lighting.  Over a ten (10) year period, the City expects to save over $100,000 on annual energy cost savings.   If you have any questions, please contact Scott Davidoff, Parks and Recreation Director, at or .

Library News

Fun and Learning:  Dental Hygiene WED JUL 28   3:30pm

Betsy G. Carlen from Taylor Orthodontics will teach children the importance oral hygiene and nutrition.  She will emphasize the importance of taking care of your teeth and gums.  She will also discuss nutrition and “detergent” foods that help clean teeth when you can’t brush.  Each child who participates will receive a goody bag filled with surprises.  Ages 5 and up.  Registration required. 

Tales to Tails:  TUES  JUL 30  3:00 pm

Come to the Parkland Library and read to Leyna. Children can gain confidence in their reading skills by reading to a pet therapy dog.  This program is for children 5 to 12 years old.  Registration required. 

Creative Kids: Story and Craft Mix Up:  WED AUG 4  3:00

Dive into the library for a fun story and then select a craft to create with friends.  Ages 8 and up.  Registration required.

End of Summer Ice Cream Social:   MON AUG 9  2:00 pm

End your summer with a splash at the library!  Create your own ice cream sundae and create a seaworthy craft. Try our water ball toss game and get a fishy tattoo.  Then line up to meet our super splashy special guest!  Bring your camera and autograph book! This event is sponsored by TD Bank.  Ages 2 and up. Registration required.

Summer Recreation Registration: Parkland Kids Camp and Teen Camp

The Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration in person and by mail for the Summer Recreation Program for both residents and non-residents.  The Parkland Summer Recreation Kids and Teen Programs are for children ages 5-14.  Registration forms and camp calendars are available to download on the city website or may be picked up at the Parkland Amphitheater.  Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Spots fill quickly, so register early. Camp sites locations are both Westglades Middle School and Heron Heights for the Elementary Program and Westglades Middle School for the Teen Program.  Click here for more details Parkland, FL – Summer Camp for Kids

Optional Summer Camp Field Trip – Blizzard Beach or Universal Studios

On Wednesday, July 30th, campers ages 8 and up may attend an optional field trip to either Blizzard Beach or Universal Studios.  The fee for this trip is $85.00 and includes transportation, admission to one of the parks, dinner, snack and supervision.  The hours of the trip are from 6AM-11PM.  Payment must be made no later than Friday, July 23.  Registration for this trip may be made online, at camp or at the amphitheater.  For further information, contact GerriAnn Dougherty at or email .

NEW!  Art Classes for Adults & Children:  MON & WED JULY 19, 21, 26 & 28

The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department is offering Art Classes for children, teens and adults on Mondays & Wednesdays this summer beginning in July.  The classes are held twice a week for each age group.  The fee for one class is $12 and for a four week series is $80.  Advance registration is required.   Click here for more details Parkland, FL – Art Classes

Healthy Lifestyle Workshop: TUESDAYS, AUG 3 – SEPT 7

The Healthy Living Workshops or Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs are funded by the Health Foundation of South Florida through the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County. The self-management program is interactive and has been well received by past participants of the program. After 6 weeks completion participants receive certificates. The 6 week – 2 1/2 hour workshop is provided 1x per week. It is a free program for 15-20 participants. Refreshments are served. The program will be held on Tuesdays, beginning August 3rd and runs through to September 7. The program time is from 1:30PM to 4:00PM. The classes will be held at the Parkland City Hall, 6600 University Drive. This program is open to participants ages 21 and older. Spots are limited so register early.

AARP Driver Safety Course:   SAT  AUG 21

This AARP Driver Safety Course is a 6 hour course scheduled for Saturday, August 21 from 9AM to 3PM for participants 50 and older.  The cost to attend the class is $12.00 for members and $14.00 for non-members.  Advance Registration is required.  This class will be held at the Parkland City Hall.   Click here for more details Parkland, FL – AARP Driver’s Safety Program

Parent Night Out:  FRI  JULY 30

Enjoy a night out on the town while your kids enjoy a fun-filled evening full of games, arts & crafts, movie, and much more. This program is for children ages 4-12. Advance registration is required. Children will be supervised by the City of Parkland Summer Recreation Staff & the Teen Advisory Group Members. Program hours are 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  $10.00 per participant or $25.00 per family. Ice Cream Sundae’s in the Park:   AUG 1   11:00 am – 1:00 pm

The City of Parkland and North Broward Preparatory School welcomes all Parkland residents to this fantastic FREE event which will feature a make your own Ice Cream Sundae station and music at Terramar Park on August 1, 2010 from 11:00am till 1:00pm.
