Broward students fare well in third grade FCAT tests

Broward County Public Schools third grade students produced the top FCAT results among the five largest Florida school districts in overall reading and math performance, according to 2010 results released by the Florida Department of Education.

Overall, students registered a math proficiency rate of 80 percent, exceeding the statewide rate of 78 percent by two percentage points. Broward’s third grade students also attained a math proficiency rate that exceeded that of other large districts by one to five percentage points. Since 2006, for four consecutive years, Broward has demonstrated higher achievement than the state on third grade FCAT math.

In the FCAT reading, Broward’s third grade students registered a proficiency rate of 72%, which exceeds that of the other large districts, and equals the statewide rate. The 2010 FCAT reading results marked the fourth time in five years that more than 70 percent of the District third graders reached the level of proficiency, along with 2009 (71%), 2008 (72%) and 2006 (75%).

During the 2010 school year, third-graders FCAT reading proficiency rate increased one percentage point, with 72% at Achievement Level 3 of higher compared to 2009 (71% at Achievement Level 3 or higher). Overall, Broward’s FCAT reading proficiency rate has increased four percentage points since 2007.

“We are extremely pleased to be leading the state’s big five school districts,” said Superintendent James F. Notter. “We are very proud of our students’ performance. These scores are representative of quality teachers implementing effective teaching and learning strategies on a day-to-day basis.”
