Professional Roller Derby Bout Saturday, March 13 at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will again sponsor the Gold Coast Derby Grrls (GCDG) in a professional roller derby bout at 8 p.m.,

Gold Coast Derby Girls

Sat., March 13. Gate opens at 7 p.m. The Blitzburgh Bombers will travel from Pittsburgh for the competition on a special flat, oval track located on the northwest side of the casino’s parking lot. The bout is sanctioned by the Gold Coast Derby League.

Tickets are only $8 in advance at the casino’s cashier’s cage; $12 at the door; $15 for the 21-and-over “crash zone” (available at door only, sold by GCDG). Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“We were astounded by the attendance for the first bout here on January 30th. Female roller derby is skyrocketing in popularity here in South Florida!” said Steve Bonner, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek general manager.

Nearly 1,000 fans, many of them new to this sport, showed up for the exciting action. These tough-but-friendly athletes revel in blocking, pivoting and jamming (passing) in a manner not unlike NASCAR — or if you’ve been watching the Winter Olympics — short track speed skating. (Roller derby rules are hard to understand from a description; this YouTube video helps: .)

No-one was seriously injured on that beautiful night in January but there were plenty of bumps and crashes. The girls, many of whom are professionals by day, go by names like Carnivorous Licks, R. Mia of Darkness, and Jess Business at night. Wearing short skirts and sexy laced-knit stockings, roller derby skaters play for keeps. A crash zone is set aside at one end of the track for those thrill-seeking fans who don’t mind a skater skidding after a hard hit and winding up in their laps. In fact, they seem to hope that happens.
